Rade\u0107i na projektu razvoja novih baterija i istra\u017euju\u0107i kombinacije materijala za njih, do\u0161li su do zapanjuju\u0107eg otkri\u0107a \u2013 jedna slitina koju su proizveli nije pokazivala gotovo nikakvu sklonost promjeni volumena (termalnu ekspanziju odnosno toplinsko rastezanje) pri vrlo \u0161irokom rasponu temperatura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nulta toplinska ekspanzija<\/strong><br><strong><br><\/strong>Njihovo ispitivanje potvrdilo je da ovaj materijal, koji je kombinacija kisika, aluminija, volframa i skandija, ima svojstvo koje se na engleskom opisuje kao ZTE (zero thermal expansion) \u2013 i to sve od temperature od 4 pa do 1.400 Kelvina. To je, ako vam je lak\u0161e zamisliti u stupnjevima Celzija, raspon od -269,15 \u00b0C pa sve do 1126,85 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ZTE je vrlo rijetko fizikalno svojstvo, a materijal koji nije podlo\u017ean toplinskom rastezanju mogao bi imati vrlo \u0161iroku primjenu u elektroni\u010dkim ure\u0111ajima, u svemirskoj i aeronauti\u010dkoj tehnologiji, ali je od velikog interesa i za znanstvenike koji \u0107e ga sigurno htjeti istra\u017eiti na fundamentalnoj razini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ovaj novi materijal opisuje se kao ortorompski kristalni sustav formule Sc1.5Al0.5W3O12, a njegovi izumitelji jo\u0161 mu nisu dali neko pamtljivije komercijalno ime. Za sada ka\u017eu da je tek rije\u010d o jednom od toplinski najstabilnijih poznatih materijala, a koeficijenti toplinskog rastezanja su mu, u svim smjerovima unutar kristalne re\u0161etke, iznimno niski, reda veli\u010dine 10\u20138.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Za svemirsku tehnologiju<\/strong><br><br>Istra\u017eiva\u010di nisu sigurni zbog \u010dega upravo ova kombinacija elemenata u ovoj strukturi pokazuje nultu toplinsku ekspanziju i poru\u010duju da rade na daljnjim istra\u017eivanjima kako bi shvatili unutarnje mehanizme svojeg otkri\u0107a. Isto tako, najavili su i da \u0107e poku\u0161ati rijetki i skupi element skandij zamijeniti s nekim drugim, jeftinijim i dostupnijim elementom, a da pritom zadr\u017ee ista svojstva ovog ZTE materijala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kao mogu\u0107a primjena svakako se spominje potencijal izrade svemirskih letjelica koje moraju pretrpjeti visoke temperature kod lansiranja i ulaska u atmosferu, ali i apsolutnu nulu u svemiru.
